In Homage to Tree Peonies and Patience

All I want to do today is praise the tree peony. A flamboyant, extrovert, voluptuous flower, outrageously over the top and yet with a paradoxical elegance and subtlety.

Tree peonies don’t come easily. Patience is required to cultivate them. They are best planted and then forgotten until, suddenly and miraculously, a bloom visible from 100 paces calls out and says “Here I am at last.”

  1. “A flamboyant, extrovert, voluptuous flower” 🙂

What’s not to like about a flower like this?

Absolutely. But these days people seem to disdain the excesses of the baroque and the tree peony is oh so baroque! Or maybe rococo when it starts to age and goes floppy and uneven in its glory!
